Missoula Reading Tutor

growing roots for a love of reading

About

Lisa Hayhurst, Founder

There is no greater joy than helping a child learn to read!

I am a certified reading tutor and mother of three who has spent the past decade working with elementary school kids. I am trained in Orton-Gillingham through IMSE. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Montana, Missoula. I continue my education through professional development, gathering the latest research and strategies to implement with my students. My aim is to develop confident readers by providing a structured, systematic program, that is research based, multi-sensory, fun and engaging!

Ten years ago, I thought reading came easy to almost everyone- after all I never had trouble and my first born picked it right up.  My other two children struggled with reading, and I couldn’t understand why. I had read out loud to all of my kids, surrounded them with lots of books and modeled reading in our home, along with my husband.  What I didn't realize is MOST kids need direct and clear reading instruction to learn how to read. I love listening to kids learning to read and seeing their self-confidence grow along with their reading skills.

what parents say...

Lisa did an incredible job helping our son overcome pandemic-related setbacks in his reading skills. She worked with him over the summer (around our crazy summer schedule) and, not only did his confidence soar, but he truly grasped fundamentals of reading that he'd missed previously. After only a few sessions, Lisa was able to help reading just click for him- it was remarkable. Since then, he has continued to progress and we couldn't be more grateful for Lisa's obvious gift working with emerging readers.                                                               - Hillary

If you are a parent with a student who is struggling with their reading, we highly recommend working with Lisa. She met our child where they were at, engaged them in a thoughtful and creative way and offered support, positive feedback and consistency. Our child not only learned to read, but improved by several grade levels and now has a passion for reading. Thank you Lisa!  - Ramey & Jesse

Reflecting on our experience working with you (Lisa) my daughter (now 8, 7 at the time she worked with you) and I both agreed reading with you was so very worthwhile!

For me, you (Lisa) provided a knowledgeable resource for one on one reading help for Maggie at a time when she was needing extra help- but not from me! With the many interruptions in her education related to the pandemic- Maggie needed some extra help, Lisa provided tutoring resources that were accessible to us, she was flexible with scheduling, and I felt very comfortable having Lisa work with my daughter knowing her training and hearing positive feedback from other parents who’s children Lisa had tutored.

When I asked Maggie what the experience was like for her- she was very enthusiastic! She is so glad she got to work with you (Lisa) and shared that you made reading practice fun! When something was hard- you helped her thru and kept going, instead of making her stay stuck on a hard word. You provided interesting and entertaining reading materials- there were new books every time you met. Maggie also enjoyed the combination of her reading, you reading, and word work. Thanks Lisa!   - Annie
